Jacki Rand (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma) is an Associate Professor in the Department of History. Rand’s first book, Kiowa Humanity and the Invasion of the State, examines how Kiowas of the southern plains dealt with the federal government after being forced on to a reservation in 1867 and the Kiowas’ responses to U.S. colonialism. Rand’s current project explores violence against Native women during the late twentieth center in the Southeast. Jacki Rand shares her path to academia and the University of Iowa via the Smithsonian and a trip to India, and she discusses the importance of the Humanities as a Native woman.
